Welcome to a new school year! This year, we’ve added a new online database to our line-up — Daily Life Through History Premium, provided by Greenwood Publishing.
This database combines content from the Daily Life Through History and World Cultures Today databases. Together, they are a rich source of historical background that can also be connected to contemporary society around the globe. Daily Life Through History Premium provides access to material from hundreds of Greenwood’s print titles and is especially strong in social history resources. It will be valuable for many projects in a variety of subject areas. The database also includes primary documents, maps, timelines, and many folk tales and fairy tales from around the world.
We are working on a guidesheet to help you navigate this new database and take advantage of all that it offers. We will post the completed guidesheet here on the blog and print copies will be available in the library.
You can access this database from home or school by using this URL:
http://dailylife.greenwood.com
Stop by the library and pick up a “blue sheet” with the usernames and passwords for all 10 of our subscription databases.

LIBRARY RENOVATION April 30, 2009

As I write this, a crew of workers is moving all the books and other materials out of the library in preparation for the start of renovations next week. That means some big changes for all of us for the last few weeks of the school year.
The Tech Lab space is also being so closed, but Rooms 121 and 123 will be open for drop-in computer use before and after school and for most periods during the school day. Check the schedule posted outside 121 and 123 to see which room is open and when.
The library copier is in the Math Lab and is available for your use.
Library staff has been relocated to the Math Lab and the Writing Lab. Stop by to see one of us if you have any questions. Although we no longer have access to our books, we can still help you with your research, formatting your bibliography, or other questions. Even if you don’t have a question, stop by and say Hello! If you need to return a library book or pay a fine, see Mrs. Roy in the Math Lab.
And we’ll keep you posted on the renovation plans.

As a kind of public service to the Res community, library staff compiled a list of books that would make good gifts. We asked Res staff and Library Club members for suggestions and then we put them all together in a little booklet which was offered to students in Homeroom today. Extras are available in the library and at the Main Desk of the school. We hope it comes in handy when you are looking for just the right gift! Our thanks to all the staff and students who submitted their suggestions.

GLASS EXHIBIT June 26, 2008

If you’ve been knocking around the house looking for something to do and driving your family nuts with your restless pacing, there’s an exhibit about glass at the Museum of Science & Industry that looks really neat. Glass is one of those materials that is both beautiful and useful — and fascinating! To get to the Museum, you can take the CTA #10 Museum of Science & Industry bus, or the #2 Hyde Park Express, the #6 Jackson Park Express, or the #X28 Jackson Park Express. Or you can take the Metra Electric line from the Randolph or Van Buren Street stations downtown. Check here for all the specifics.
After taking in all of the technology at the Museum, you may be looking to commune with nature a bit, so walk around the south side of the Museum to Wooded Isle. It was constructed for the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and it, along with the Museum itself, is one of the few remaining “structures” from the Fair. You can read about the Fair in this entry from the online version of the Encyclopedia of Chicago. If you like your history with a side of scandal, add Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City to your summer reading list.
Curious about the whole phenomenon of a World’s Fair? Check out the ExpoMuseum, a website created by passionate fan of World’s Fairs.
GOOD LUCK, SENIORS! May 12, 2008

Good luck, seniors, as you begin your final exams tomorrow. Before you head out the door, diploma in hand, I have one last piece of advice: next fall at college, make sure to attend one of the library orientation sessions. They are usually offered at the beginning of each semester–check your college’s library website or blog for dates and times. They are a great way to find out about library resources and services and meet some of the library staff. You may not be using the library in your first few weeks of college, but eventually you’ll be doing research and by attending one of the orientation sessions, you’ll feel more comfortable asking the librarians for help.
